Workshops
Justin's workshops operate on the same basis as the 1-2-1 tuition days, except that they can be attended by a minimum of two photographers, and a maximum of three. This allows a couple or a small group of friends to attend the same day, whilst also benefiting from a reduced price compared to the 1-2-1 cost. With such a small workshop group, you can be assured of Justin's attention, tuition and feedback throughout the day. It is precisely for this reason that maximum numbers are limited to 3 people.
As Justin's time will be spread between the participants, it is highly recommended that all photographers in the group have roughly the same experience level. This will allow guidance to be given the group as a whole and also individual tuition divided evenly between participants.
Workshops will be tailored to suit the group's photography needs and availability. Justin will be at hand throughout the day to provide you with encouragement, guidance, instruction and feedback to help improve your landscape photography. Workshops are usually carried out on either the Lizard Peninsula, Penwith Peninsula or the South & North coasts of Cornwall.
Living in West Cornwall, Justin has very good knowledge of the region and it's photographic potential at all times of the year. Alternatively, if you prefer, Justin can put together a bespoke itinerary based on specific Cornwall locations the group may wish to photograph. If you would like to arrange a workshop in a location of your choice please do not hesitate to contact Justin to discuss your requirements.
The typical duration of a workshop will be approximately 16 hours during the summer months, and 9 hours during the winter months: though timings and day length can be tailored to suit your group's requirements, if time is limited. During a typical day, we would begin with a sunrise shoot and then aim to visit a minimum of three to four other locations, ending the day with a sunset shoot. Justin will select the optimum locations to visit, taking into account the weather, tides, seasonal variation and any preferences your group may have to ensure you are capturing each location at it’s very best. Justin's tuition is informal and friendly and areas that can be covered, depending on experience and requirements are: how best to location scout at each site; composition; mastering exposure; using the light; why, when and how to use filters (LEE ND graduated, Firecrest ND and Heliopan circular polarising filter will be available for your group's use during the day, if required); long exposure techniques; capturing in RAW rather than jpeg - advantage and disadvantages.
Most sites are within approximately 30 minutes walk from the parking location and will involve some uphill/downhill walking. As workshops are tailored to suit your group's requirements, I'm happy to discuss any mobility constraints/site access options with your group prior to booking if that would be helpful.
Obviously the weather is something that we cannot guarantee, so if the forecast is looking unfavourable for your group's selected day, and you wish to postpone to an alternative day: I am happy to reschedule to a mutually agreeable date.
As each workshop is tailored to your group, these days are suitable for beginner, intermediate and advanced photographers.
If your group are travelling from some distance and will need to book overnight accommodation, there are various options to suit all budgets. The Premier Inn on the outskirts of Camborne is located just off the main A30 road and close to Justin's home. Justin will be able to pick-up/drop-off at this location, so you will not need to use your car on the day. If you find accommodation further afield, either directions will be provided to meet at Justin's home (where you will be able to leave your car safely for the day); or, if your accommodation is en route, pick-up/drop off may be possible. Please feel free to discuss these options prior to booking if you wish.
